Happenings Lately and a New Discovery

Good Morning!

For some reason my only class today got cancelled, so I have an unexpected day off! It’s definitely much needed with lots of work to catch up on and some cleaning to do. Before I get going, I thought I’d share what’s been happening lately – some good eats, some great workouts, and a surprising new discovery.

Workouts have been going as planned, except I’ve swapped my Wednesday and Friday runs since Tuesday’s bootcamp kicked my butt! Wednesday’s run ended up being 6 miles with hills mixed in – done at the gym on the treadmill. I was able to keep a constant pace throughout even though my legs were extremely tired. After some rest today, I’m hoping tomorrow’s speedwork will be a success :)

Breakfast has been slightly different from my usual oats .. well, only one day – the rest include oats with an egg on the side ;)

This is when I discovered something new …

Lately, my stomach hasn’t been at its best. My acid reflux flared up and stomach pains were coming out of no where. So uncomfortable and annoying since I hadn’t eaten anything with cow’s milk and I hadn’t tried any new-to-me foods.

To my surprise, lactose intolerance was the topic of the week in a few of my classes and after learning about it yet again, something stuck out at me. Some lactose intolerant individuals can tolerate yogurt and buttermilk, while many cannot. Greek yogurt is (was) my staple afternoon snack for as long as I can remember. It never bothered me … until now. For several days, I payed close attention to how I felt after eating anything with greek yogurt. I decided to avoid it for a few days and thought that Monday I would try it again.

After getting over the sadness of my oats being gone, it hit me. (TMI alert)  The stomach pains, cramps, bloating and nausea. I could barely walk and I could feel an attack coming on. I made myself move since I know it makes it better. I immediately went to the fridge and threw the yogurt out – I was so mad and in pain I didn’t even want to see it. It’s official, I can’t tolerate yogurt anymore.

Thank goodness for lactose free products. I can still have my usual yogurt snack, it just has to be lactose free (I tried the sheep’s milk and goat’s milk type – I did NOT like them). The only downside is the lower protein content, but that’s easily fixed with the addition of nuts or pairing it with a hardboiled egg for a snack.

All I know is that I’m glad that I’ve figured out what my stomach’s deal has been. Since avoiding the greek yogurt, my stomach has been feeling better and my acid reflux has calmed down. I’m starting to think I should go get tested for any other food intolerances or allergies!

Once the yogurt ordeal was all sorted out, I was able to enjoy some more good eats.

Packed lunches for my long days – a mix of leftovers, fresh fruits and veggies, and my nutty protein bar

Lastly, I’ve been rocking my CEP Compression socks! The great part about the cold weather is wearing pants that cover these ;)

IMG_6192My shin has been slowly feeling better and I feel like the socks are contributing to that along with the icing and heat i’ve been doing. Who knows! As long as it’s getting better, I’ll continue doing what I’m doing :)

I’m hoping to get my biochem outline done and my food science paper started today. Let’s see how productive I can be before I have to teach spin at 6:30pm tonight :) It’s definitely enough time to get stuff done!

Question: Any good eats/recipes lately?

Question: Has something you’ve always eaten suddenly start to give you problems?

Have a great day!

  1. Hooray for an unexpected day off. I love those kinds of surprises.

Sorry about the yogurt. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t eat it. :-(
